Team Girl Comic is a Glasgow-based group of comics creators from a variety of backgrounds, ages and interests. We regularly publish anthologies, and a lot of us have side projects we collectively promote. Our aim is to showcase women and girls in the alternative comic scene, as well as to entertain! Our stories range from autobiographical to the more whimsical and surreal.

The group was founded by Gill Hatcher in 2009 and has rapidly grown in numbers since. Today we are a thriving social community, creating comics together, organising events, going on roadtrips to comic cons… and just chatting online about comics!

We are strictly non-elitist and invite anyone female-identified in or from Scotland to submit to the comic, whether they create art professionally or just fancy giving it a go.

FAQ »

How do I get involved?

We are open to submissions from female-identified artists of any experience. This means that we have grown to become a fairly large group, but we try to fit as much quality work in our pages as possible! If you have some work you would like to submit for consideration for a future issue of Team Girl Comic please contact the editors at info@teamgirlcomic.com.

We’re also a social group and regularly organise meetings, drawing workshops, stalls and social events. There is no level of commitment required to hang out with us, we’re basically a bunch of like-minded people having fun and making stuff!

How good do I have to be to join Team Girl Comic?

In terms of experience, we want to be as inclusive as possible. If you are a cartooning regular looking for a new project, someone who likes drawing comics but is a bit shy about them, or if you’re new to comics but have a great idea for a strip, we welcome your submission. Obviously you have to have some belief in yourself and your own ability! But amazing drawing skills do not necessarily make a good comic strip, it’s being able to effectively communicate your ideas that’s important. We enjoy printing great stories told in a wide variety of styles.

Is Team Girl Comic feminist?

Comics have huge potential as an artistic medium and literary form, but their world can often seem alienating to female readers and creators. We want to be part of the change, and in this respect Team Girl Comic is feminist. However our core reason for being is to build a community of female creators around Scotland, and to entertain people with our stories, so our comics don’t have to have a feminist or political theme to them. We make comics by women for everyone.

Can men contribute to the comic?

No. It’s not that we don’t like you, it’s just that we are all about promoting comics by women and girls. However, if you are a male cartoonist, we’d still like to be your friend! Everyone on the scene should stick together and help each other out.

Is Team Girl Comic suitable for children?

Our comics are not inappropriately violent or sexual in nature, but you may find a mild swearword here and there. Whilst we do not aim TGC specifically at a younger audience, we would like it to be a product that a young girl could pick up and be inspired by. Children might not understand or enjoy every story in TGC, but we hope there will always be something in there they will like. The comics by our youngest cartoonists are particularly popular with kids.
